Carolyn

2011–2014, Completed, Ready for Exhibition

Statement

Carolyn is a collection of portraits of Siegfried’s mother taken during her ninety-eighth and ninety-ninth years, culminating in her 100th birthday. Suffering from dementia for the last four years of her life, Siegfried’s mother possessed extraordinary beauty and an impressive will to live. Elizabeth’s intention in making these portraits was to celebrate the light that shone, although often dimly, as she caught poignant glimpses of her mother’s day-to-day struggles and frustrations in contrast with occasional displays of childlike pleasure.

Siegfried’s mother died on Mother’s Day 2014, four months after her 100th birthday.
